Artist's Description

La Rogativa monument in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. A work by New Zealander sculptor Lindsay Daen (1923-2001), a long time resident of Old San Juan. The work depicts Bishop Arizmendi leading a prayer procession through Old San Juan with "jachos" (oil lamps) in preparation for an upcoming 1797 battle with british troops led by Sir Ralph Abercrombie. As the legend goes, the british, seeing the hundreds of lights from far away, thought the Spanish Army was bringing in heavy reinforcements and fled without a shot being fired.
